FAQs
-
How long does the project take? For a typical basement finish, assuming there is minimal demo or removing of existing items, we like to set a 7-9 week timeline. That includes everything from prep to get the site ready, to finishing the punch list at the end of the project. Sometimes there are items or issues that do stretch that timeline, but we do everything in our power to keep as close as possible to it.

What is the design process?Taking the time to design a layout that not only will look great, but will be functional is very important in our eyes. I will typically start with two different layouts to allow the customer’s mind to envision something different than they may have had in their mind. We work through revisions, combining certain aspects from the design layouts that will lend itself to the best layout for the customer. Drawings and 3D renderings are done to give the customer the best idea of what their space will look like before any construction is started.
-
What if something changes from the design when construction is started?Change orders are something that can be common in construction projects. One of my prioritized goals is to have zero change orders on Taproot’s behalf from beginning to end. If an unforeseen issue does come up that needs to be addressed, we will consult with the homeowner and present any potential solutions.

Who does the actual work?We have a team of professional sub-contractors that are all masters in their field, licensed and insured for the full project. Working with the same subs for every project is like having a team of masters in each of their fields for experienced and quality work. Taproot handles all managing, scheduling and coordination to make the process as streamlined as possible.

What does a basement cost to finish?Part of the reason we take pride and prioritize the design process is so we can present you an accurate and thorough proposal that will not fluctuate as the project goes. Every project is different and has individual factors that will always make costs different; square footage, ceiling heights, need for an added form of egress, plumbing requirements, electrical requirements, fixture selections, material selections. At our initial meeting after discussing the beginning scope and ‘wish list’ ideas, I always provide a range based on finished square footage. These ranges can vary from $45-$55/sf for a basic layout, up to $70-$80/sf for a very detailed and intricate layout.
-
Do we have to get Permits? We will always advise the customer to get permits for their project. Each township and municipality differ in terms of requirements for permits and inspections. Taproot will provide all necessary drawings, applications, submittals, scheduling inspections and being on site for scheduled inspections. Having a documented record of your project within your municipality is vital should you look to sell your home, refinance, and for insurance purposes.

Will I recoup value in finishing my basement?Yes! A common ROI amount for a finished basement is around 75 cents on the dollar for your project’s cost.
